A HALF century from Jamie Harvey maintained Winterbourne’s promotion charge with victory over Breamore in Regional Division One West.

Winterbourne won the toss and elected to bowl first against Breamore, despite missing opening bowler Vaughn Browne in the first innings due to a family emergency.

Joe Cunningham was asked to replace him and bowled a tidy six over an opening spell, conceding 16 runs. At the other end, Tom Richardson was a little more wayward and but his pace meant that anything loose was hard to get away but was also wicketless after his opening six overs.

With wickets needed, the skipper turned to Nick Fiddy and Ed Dadd. Fiddy made the breakthrough in the 17th over when he bowled Shaun Marlow, for 27. Dadd had Marlow's brother Steve caught behind the next over and suddenly Winterbourne were back in the match at 63 for 2.

Paul Veit upped the run rate with six quick boundaries as the score raced to 97 off 25 overs.

The dismissal of Veit triggered the loss of five wickets in eight overs as Dadd swept through the middle order. He put on a display of fantastic leg spin bowling as he ended up with figures of 5-44.

It was left to Matt Newman to take the final wicket in the 39th over as Breamore were out for 150.

Needing under four runs an over to win, Winterbourne’s chase was steady with the openers putting on 48 runs in the first 12 overs.

Matt Windows was first to go when he was bowled by Alan Bennett for 11 and Jamie Harvey followed five overs later when he was stumped for 57.

Manny Gurung was lbw for six and when Craig Johnson was caught the following over for 18, the game was in the balance at 98-4 off 24 overs.

Newman and latecomer Browne put on 30 runs to settle any nerves, and following Browne’s dismissal for 20, it was left to Dadd to help Winterbourne home. He finished unbeaten on six with the skipper 20 not out.
