THERE are elated cricketers at Winterbourne after they finished their league campaign in style with a thumping 175-run victory over Suttoners II to confirm third place and promotion into County Division 4.

Winterbourne lost an early wicket when Matt Windows was bowled for four.

Jamie Harvey and Matt Newman then put on 123 runs before Harvey was caught for 64.

Richard Johnson carried on his fine form with 68 not out, and together with Newman, the pair ensured maximum batting points were achieved as the score went past 200.

Newman fell nine runs short of a maiden league century when he was bowled for 91 and with some late order hitting, Winterbourne finished on 276 for 5.

Chris Breeze took a wicket with his second ball and at the other end, Abbas bowled an excellent opening spell, removing Bennett in his second over. He took two more wickets, including the dangerous Insall for 38 to finish with figures of 3 for 21 from just eight overs.

Breeze took wickets at regular intervals and finished with 4 for 50 from ten overs.

Suttoners were dismissed for 89 as Hassan bowled Pyle and then Malcolm Griffiths bowled Rendell shortly before the heavens opened. It meant that not a single game was lost to the weather all season.

The win was Winterbourne’s 14th of the season, losing just three times.
