MATT Newman completed his duties as Winterbourne skipper by taking three wickets in what was a commanding 132-run win over Pylewell Park in County Division 4 West.

Outgoing Newman, who has stepped down to vice-captain, will be replaced by Ryan Hughes, who has already stamped his authority on the side.

Openers Jamie Harvey and Craig Johnson dominated the opening bowling attack, running excellently between the wickets. They maintained a healthy run rate of five an over for the first 14 overs before Harvey was caught for 41 with the score on 81.

The fall of the first wicket saw the run rate plummet with five consecutive maidens being bowled.

Only 25 runs were scored in 12 overs and it was looking like Winterbourne were going to struggle once again to post a match-winning score.

Matt Windows tried to hit out but was caught on the boundary for 11 and Johnson followed for a well made 70. Ed Dadd pushed the score along and, together with Dan Marsh, they took the score to 187. Marsh was bowled for 12 and Dadd followed in the next over for 35.

Breeze hit a couple of late boundaries to take the score to a respectable 217-6 after 45 overs.

Winterbourne's opening bowlers, Nick Lawrence and Joe Cunningham gave nothing away at the start.

But, like in previous matches, no wickets were forthcoming and it wasn't until the introduction of Dadd and Breeze that the match started to turn in Winterbourne's favour.

Dadd made the breakthrough in his first over, bowling a wicket maiden as Pylewell's dangerous looking captain was caught for 19. Breeze then struck in the next over, bowling Sterling for 10, and then Dadd had Brooks caught behind for five.

From then on, Pylewell's batting collapsed as Winterbourne turned the screw with an excellent display of bowling.

It was left to Newman to finish off the innings as he took three for three in 20 balls.
