A FIVE-WICKET haul from Ed Dadd and Som Magar's half century saw Winterbourne ease to a 70-run win when Southampton Travellers visited.

It was a fifth straight victory for 'Bourne which lifted them into fourth as they continue to push for promotion from County Division 4 West.

Batting first, Jamie Harvey and Craig Johnson battled it out against the best opening duo of the season, with Mark and Will Lawless bowling an excellent line and length. Despite this, they managed to find a boundary every over to keep the scoreboard ticking along as they reached 65 without loss after 15 overs.

Having done all the hard work, Chris Hillier was introduced into the attack, Harvey holed out a long off and was out for 28. Johnson followed a few overs later for 31 and suddenly Winterbourne were potentially in trouble.

However, Magar gave the middle order some vital impetus, smashing one handed fours and sixes through the leg side in an innings which would later prove to be a match-winner. Matt Windows, at the other end, played the vital role of anchor man, batting for 14 overs and putting on an 82-run partnership with Som for the third wicket. Som eventually fell for 63 and Windows followed two overs later for 16.

Matt Newman and Dadd put on 36 runs as the hosts finished their 45 overs on 207.

In reply, Winterbourne's bowlers couldn't have got off to a better start as Manny Gurung had Lawless caught for one. Skipper Ryan Hughes (1 for 21) then clipped Richard Thorpe Manley's off stump and Southampton were reeling at three for two in the fifth over. Gurung finished an excellent opening spell of six overs with one-wicket for seven runs.

But when Shiv Choudhury came to the crease along with Kevin Sims, the pair took the score to 80 after 19 overs.

Up stepped leading wicket taker Dadd who was brought into the attack along with Newman. Dadd struck in his second over as Sims smashed a long hop straight down the throat of Gurung at deep-mid wicket.

Then, a brilliant catch by Som at cover gave Newman his first wicket as Jamie Simpson departed for six.

Choudhury made Winterbourne pay for a dropped catch as he passed his half century as the Travellers reached 94 for 4.

Dadd then took two wickets and four overs later Choudhury was caught at slip for a fine 77.

Dadd finished with figures of 5 for 31 as Kevin Allen was caught for 2.

Newman (3 for 40) picked up the wicket of Mark Lawless for three and finished off a weak tail thanks to a third catch by Gurung as Bob Kinnear was out for two, ending the innings on 137.
