SHREWTON United’s disappointing start to the Wiltshire Premier League continued after a narrow 2-3 home defeat to Devizes, despite creating numerous chances.

The opening exchanges were dominated by the hosts as Craig Lewis steered a Graham Coombes cross wide from six yards, before seeing three more efforts narrowly miss the target.

Shrewton’s early dominance paid off after 20 minutes when a deft through ball from Dean Shaw played Lewis in behind the Devizes back line and he calmly rounded the keeper to slot home.

The goal weirdly sparked Devizes into life and they were quickly back on level terms as they converted their first shot of the game following a corner.

The visitors started to get on top and were clinical as they profited from a goalmouth scramble to make it 2-1. And moments later they extended their lead with a fierce effort that gave Shrews stopper Joe Sheldrake no chance.

Devizes’ quickfire goals left the home side in shock but, to their credit, they retook control of the game and were denied a penalty on the stroke of half time as Lewis was brought down in the box but the referee dismissed all protests.

It was one-way traffic after the break and on 65 minutes the pressure paid-off as a low pinpoint cross from Coombes found Lewis, who slotted home to make it 3-2, and clinch a brace.

The remainder of the game saw Devizes camped in their half.

Ross Bentall watched his spectacular volley tipped onto the post and Kieron Kiff’s header was saved before Lewis Barr fired across goal.

Shrewton are next in action on Saturday with the visit of Trowbridge Town.
