SHREWTON United’s fine form continued as they hit seven past Wilts Calne Town in a one-sided contest to climb into fourth in the Wiltshire Premier League.

Captain Dean Foot and Lewis Barr returned for United in the centre of midfield and, alongside Joey Weeks, helped dictate the game in a comfortable 7-2 home victory.

Craig Appleby was the first on the scoresheet for Shrewton as he beat his man before firing across the box which eluded everyone including the Calne goalkeeper to find the back of the net.

Shrewton's top goalscorer Craig Lewis caused the visitors problems from the first minute and, soon after the opener, he played a major role in doubling the lead. He weaved past two defenders before the ball was turned into the net by a Calne player for an own goal.

The remainder of the 45 minutes was played in the visitors’ half as the dominant home side looked like running riot. However, Calne showed resistance and entered half-time trailing 2-0.

The visitors started the second period brightly and were rewarded for an improved showing as a fine free kick from the edge of the box flew past Joe Sheldrake to half the advantage.

The goal seemed to wake Shrewton up and minutes later they had their two-goal cushion restored as Barr headed home from a corner before Lewis made it 4-1 from the penalty spot after the impressive Dom Jackson was brought down in the box.

By now, it was one-way traffic as United took command against their struggling opponents and it wasn’t long before Carlos Downie finished a nice cross from eight yards.

Rapidly after, the over worked Calne goalkeeper was called into action again as he expertly denied Lewis before Graham Coombes slotted for goal number six.

The visitors got their second of the afternoon from the penalty spot before Lewis got a second to finish the rout at 7-2.

Next up for Shewton on Saturday is Amesbury Town in the Wiltshire Senior Cup.
