ALDERBURY steered into a comfortable seven-point lead at the summit of Salisbury and District (Premier) League after sealing victory in the top-of-the-table clash over South Newton and Wishford.

Despite not acquiring the early possession, the visitors sneaked their noses in front when an Adam Payne through-ball found marksman Charlie Lee, and he fired home from the edge of the box.

The lead, however, didn't last long as a pitched ball from the Alderbury keeper found their frontman and from a tight angle he knocked it home.

Moments later, a mix up between Kevin Jordan and Chris Mundy allowed Alderbury to take the lead, with their striker profiting after tucking away a simple tap in.

The second half started in the same vein, with South Newton coming out refreshed, but were made to pay for slack defending and Alderbury scrambled home a third.

The visitors kept plugging away and got back in the game from Lee’s second, before he had the chance to secure a hat-trick and an equaliser but his one-on-one effort was squandered.

South Newton searched for a leveller but, while caught chasing the game, were punished when a fourth goal confirmed the outcome.

South Newton player/manager Keith Darling spoke of his frustration after the 4-2 defeat.

He said: “I’m really disappointed with the first half performance, we just didn't get going.

“Alderbury punished us with our stupid mistakes, we were lucky to be one goal behind at half time.

“However, the lads came out second half with a much better attitude and started putting pressure on them.”
