A MARK Scott hat-trick wrecked The Wanderers’ hopes of defending the Premier Cup after he secured Alderbury’s place in the final.

First and third from Salisbury and District Premier League squared up for a thrilling encounter at Junction Road, which tilted in the village side’s favour as they won 3-2.

The visitors started the brighter as they created countless chances but could not get past home keeper Sam Gillott, who was in fine form.

But the deadlock was broken after Nick Newman headed home one of Steph Tinkler’s potent deliveries.

The lead could have been stretched when Newman had a clear sight on goal, but he couldn’t find the net.

The visitors were left to rue that chance as Alderbury’s Scott was first to pounce on a rebounded effort as he poked home from two yards out.

The goal-poacher bagged another five minutes later.

On this occasion he found space following a defensive lapse and pulled the trigger to guide the hosts in front.

The Wanderers pressed to level things up and thought they had mustered a leveller when Adam Jones’ fierce drive reflected off the post.

Two minutes later, however, Alderbury were 3-1 up after Scott converted a closerange effort.

A grandstand finalé was set up when Alex Davies, on his return from a two-month injury, teed up Jones, who wasn’t denied this time.

And in injury time a golden opportunity fell to Tim Fewins but he missed the target as Wanderers exited the competition.

Wanderers boss Liam McConnell reflected: “To lose in this fashion was hugely disappointing, I felt we were in control in the first half but our discipline left us in the second half when Alderbury stepped up their game and took advantage, and all credit to them.

“We missed a host of chances, even right at the end.

“Losing a semi-final hurts more than a cup final in my opinion.

“But it's gone now. We have to pick ourselves up quickly and prepare for Saturday.”

Alderbury will fight for silverware against Stockton & Codford, 3-1 winners over Porton Sports, in the final.
