SHREWTON United moved up one place into fifth in the Wiltshire Premier League after a comfortable 3-0 home success against Corsham.

With no recognised strikers available, United manager Scott Young was forced to play 4-5-1 with Craig Appleby asked to plat as the lone striker.

The change of formation seemed to help Shrewton who controlled the game with the extra man in midfield whilst Corsham had little to offer going forward.

The first chance of the game was created after ten minutes when a mazy run by Dom Jackson led to him being dumped to the ground on the edge of the box for a free-kick in a dangerous position. George Plank stepped up and his deflected effort flew inches wide via a deflection.

The deadlock was broken in the 20th minute when Jackson once again weaved past two Corsham defenders before his 30-yarded effort was deflected into the top corner.

The first half continued to be one-way traffic with Craig Appleby seeing a curling 20-yarded effort whistle past the post before he was acrobatically denied by the Corsham goalkeeper, and Jordan Brett followed up to see his effort also blocked.

Shrewton doubled their lead just before half-time when Jordan Brett once again showed his attacking instincts as he finished off a neat passing move by coolly slotting past the keeper from 12-yards.

After the interval, there was no respite for Corsham as they initially found it increasingly difficult to get out of their half, and soon after the resumption it was 3-0 after Appleby headed home from six yards.

He was to see two efforts chalked off for offside as the game threatened to become a rout.

However, Corsham did have a chance to get back in the game with 20 minutes remaining as Shrewton custodian Matt Cross was adjudged to have brought down a visiting forward in the box and a penalty was awarded. Cross, to his credit, atoned for his mistake by making a remarkable penalty save when the ball was heading for the top corner.

Minutes later Shrewton should have extended their lead as good work by Kieron Kiff and Joe Sheldrake led to Kiff getting behind the visiting defence before squaring to Plank who fired from six yards.

Shrewton manager Scott Young said: “I am pleased with the result and the clean sheet.”

Sarum Youth Seniors slumped to a 3-1 home defeat against Supermarine Sports FC.
