STOCKTON and Codford booked their place in the final of the Morrison Cup after sweeping South Newton to one side.

A convincing 5-2 win saw them eliminate the hosts and set up a final against fellow last four winners Alderbury, who beat Chalke Valley 2-1, on Easter Monday at Bemerton Heath Harlequins’ Western Way.

In a quiet opening 30 minutes, the game burst into life when the hosts opened the scoring after Billy Poole zipped a ball across the face of goal which Adam Payne tucked away for the opener.

Within minutes, Codford were level after slack defending allowed a cross to be hammered home.

Codford had their tails up and soon went ahead with a well-taken goal before Poole was impeded in the box and Rich Tutton made no mistake with the resulting penalty to make it 2-2. In the second half, both teams traded chances but it was the visitors who scored a hat-trick of goals to finish off their opponents and move to within 90 minutes of claiming some silverware.

South Newton player/manager Keith Darling said: “I thought we had a decent chance at half time.”

“There was nothing between the teams in the first half but second half we were second to everything all over the pitch. They scored three quick goals and killed the game off.

"We’ve got another semi-final on Saturday so will be looking for a big response as I believe in the lads, they work hard at training and they deserve a cup final but they have to earn it.”
