SOUTH Newton & Wishford booked a place in the third round of the Wiltshire Junior Cup with a 2-0 victory at Castle Combe.

Both sides started well but after a while the visitors began to turn the screw and built up some periods of sustained pressure, and it was from a corner kick that Newton took the lead thanks to a quite emphatic finish from the Castle Combe defender.

The home team reacted well to going a goal down and they began to build some momentum of their own, and South Newton were indebted to goalkeeper Rich Brain who made two fine saves to retain the lead at half time.

The first ten minutes of the second half saw Castle Combe pushing hard to get back into the contest, but Newton were not to be undone and midway through the half centre back Micky Tutton planted a brilliant header into the net and claimed the all-important second goal.

The Blues took the opportunity to shore things up at this stage with the introduction of Ash Blake and Pete Smith from the bench, and South Newton were able to see out the remainder of the game thanks largely to dominating performances from Mickey Ball and Rich Tutton in midfield.

With more cup games to come, South Newton will be hoping this result can provide a springboard into forthcoming fixtures. They will host Porton Sports in the next round on December 7.

In the Premier Division, Nomansland & Landford picked up three much-needed points, beating Tisbury United 4-1. Both teams had chances to take the lead but both keepers made excellent saves. The visitors went ahead with a lovely curling shot but a headed own goal levelled it a minute later.

In the second half, Dan Hayward's low free kick put Nomansland in front for the first time, Dan Jones finished off a great move to make it three and a cracking fourth from Hayward made sure of the victory.

Durrington WMC returned to the top of Division One with a convincing 5-1 win at South Newton & Wishford reserves. After a goal-less first half James Kenny gave them the lead. Newton equalised but goals from John Lane, two David Whittaker penalties and Nathan Osgood saw Durrington victorious.

Amesbury Kings Arms' good form continued with a 3-0 victory at home to Enford.

Greg Woodall got the goalscoring underway by slamming home Martin Luke's cross in the second half. Kevin Preece doubled the lead by scoring directly from a corner kick. In the final minute Stevie Leigh's defence-splitting pass put Danny Rider in on goal and he sealed the points with a tidy finish.
