Former United star at the event in a tent
FORMER Manchester United and Northern Ireland star Norman Whiteside is the special guest speaker at this year's Salisbury City's grand sportsmans' dinner - traditionally known as the Event In A Tent.
Whiteside represented his country in two World Cups and scored 66 goals for United in 273 appearances before moving to Everton, where tragically, aged just 26, his career was halted through injury problems.
The striker had become United's youngest player since Duncan Edwards when he made his debut in the 1981/82 season.
A year later he appeared in both the League Cup and the FA Cup final (beating Brighton & Hove Albion), and became the youngest player to score in both.
Whiteside broke Pele's record as the youngest player to appear in a World Cup, when he debuted for his country aged 17 years and 41 days at España 82. He started all five of Northern Ireland's matches, including the historic 1-0 win over Spain
These days he is an accomplished after-dinner speaker and appears regularly in a comedy sketch on Sky Sports 1's Soccer AM programme.
He will be joined by comedian and compere Denis Bundy for City's event on Friday, May 23.
A four-course meal will be served while table games and an auction of sporting memorabilia are also on the bill.
Tickets are now available, priced £50 each (table of ten - £500).
Contact Val Knight at the club on 01722 326454 to book seats or for more details, or email her at valk.scfc@btconnect.com .
This year's event is being sponsored by The Salisbury Journal and Glenside Manor.
Previous event in the tent guests have included Bob 'The Cat' Bevan, Nottingham Forest's double European Cup winning captain John McGovern and Liverpool and Scotland star Ian St John.
