SALISBURY CITY opened up an eight-point gap at the top of Blue Square Bet South after completing the league double over Hayes and Yeading United on Tuesday night.
New signing Elliott Frear, on a month's loan from Exeter City, went straight into the starting line-up. The 22-year-old winger has made 16 appearances for the Grecians, scored for them in the FA Cup at Walsall last season, and was on a long-term loan at Tiverton Town in 2009-10.
The Whites took the lead when Dan Fitchett rounded the keeper to finish left footed from a tight angle. After a slow start to the second half City turned up the pressure and, after Fitchett was brought down in the box with five minutes to go, he dusted himself down and dispatched the penalty to deal another valuable three points for the league leaders.
Assistant Manager Mikey Harris was delighted with the victory: “I don't think we were at our best with the ball at times tonight but the heart and desire the boys showed to win a football match was fantastic.”
