DAN Fitchett's brace at Tamworth on Tuesday night ended Salisbury City's wretched run of four straight away defeats, lifting the Whites back into the play-off positions.

Kevin Amankwaah went straight into the starting line-up after signing for the Whites on Monday. That was the only change from the XI that lost at Southport, with Brian Dutton missing through suspension for his red card in that game.

Relegation candidates Tamworth, who remain one of only two sides to win in the league at Old Sarum this season with a 1-0 opening day victory, made a bright start. Kieren Fenton's swerving left-footed drive forced former Lambs goalkeeper Will Puddy into a save inside three minutes.

Salisbury went ahead in the 16th minute, when Jamie White won a free kick. Cameron Belford saved initially from Angus MacDonald's set piece but Dan Fitchett was well placed to head in the rebound. Fitchett had another just four minutes later, tapping in an Elliott Frear cross for his third in two games.

Tamworth pulled a goal back on 32 minutes when Lee Hildreth whipped in a ball from the left which beat everyone and nestled in the far corner. The Lambs could have levelled five minutes later but Nick Chadwick's header was saved by Puddy at point-blank range.

Puddy continued to be busy in the early stages of the second half, saving from Hildreth, then from Richard Peniket. At the other end, Theo Lewis' powerful drive was blocked by Belford in the 72nd minute as the Whites tried to put the game beyond doubt.

Tamworth threatened seriously once more, when Puddy tipped over Peniket's header after 81 minutes. Salisbury held on though, to record their first away points of 2014. They have no game this weekend and their next challenge is also away from home, a key match at fellow play-off chasers Grimsby Town on Saturday, March 1.
