COMMITTED Salisbury FC fans braved the wet conditions outside Salisbury Guildhall today to collect more signatures for their stadium petition.

Many club volunteers stopped passers-by in the city, where they assembled more than 1,300 signatures for the Save Our Stadium campaign.

With roughly the same figure being met online, the club has now amassed 2,500 names that want to see football return to Old Sarum.

Organiser Thom Belk launched the campaign on social media, creating a Save Our Stadium page on Facebook and @SaveOurStadium on Twitter, with the motto on both being #SOSalisbury.

Belk says he hopes to gather as many signatures as possible before showing the petition to councillors at Salisbury Area Board’s next meeting on Thursday, March 12.

“Our aim is get a group of us at the meeting and do a presentation on the petition and provide a covering letter to show everyone.”

“Hopefully we will get more signatures than the highest attendance at the Ray Mac (3,408 – registered at Conference South play-off final in May 2013).

“Together as a group, we used our professional backgrounds to arrange the campaign.”

Former owner Mark Winter said: “We want to raise awareness of the situation and hopefully the trustees will take this seriously.”

Salisbury city councillor for the Bemerton ward Tom Corbin stood with fans for a few hours.

“I’ve seen real determined fans who want to bring football back to the Ray Mac.

“It’s really important everyone gets behind the club.

“Salisbury FC needs you to support them.

“Today was about showing your support and bringing people together to support the club.”

Salisbury MP John Glen also demonstrated his support by visiting fans at the city petition.
