GUTTED Brandon Mundy admits Salisbury will never get a better chance to play at the home of English football after their dreams were dashed by Hereford.

The midfielder has played an imperative role in Whites' rollercoaster journey in the FA Vase, which ended at the hands of the tournament favourites on Saturday.

Whites lost 2-1 in the second leg and 3-1 on aggregate.

And if they earn promotion to Southern League South West One (step four), they will be ineligible to play in the competition next season and instead will be entered in the FA Trophy.

"It's heartbreaking," he told JournalSport.

"You see people with tears in their eyes, not saying much, and we never had a better chance to get there really.

"We should have beaten them.

"We were all over them first half.

"We will never get a better opportunity in our lives.

"To go to Wembley is massive and every player wants to play there so you just have to put it to the back of your head."

A Steve Walker header evened the tie up at a roaring Ray Mac as the Whites were on the front-foot.

But Mike Symons struck minutes before half time and then a late goal from Joe Tumelty clinched the victory.

We had them exactly where we wanted," Mundy added.

"We were brilliant and all over them.

"Every time we attacked we looked like creating something.

"They didn't have anything.

"It was the goal right before half time - just one lapse of concentration let them back in it.

"It killed us really."

And to add insult to injury, Mundy was forced to leave the field of play before the hour mark, gripping his hamstring.

He pulled it in the last 16 at Nuneaton Griff and since has worked hard to quicken the recovery process.

He continued: "My hamstring has killed me this season.

"It's the fourth time I've done it and I just felt it and couldn't move and had to get taken off.

"I can feel it now, it's just biting.

"I need to do proper strengthening work now and not rush it back in."

Mundy is set to miss Whites' Easter double header this weekend, starting with the visit of Folland Sports on Saturday and then a trip to neighbours Bemerton Heath Harlequins at Western Way on Bank Holiday Monday, both 3pm kick offs.

Steve Claridge's charges returned to the top of Sydenhams Wessex League on Tuesday night with a 4-1 blast over Alresford and have four games in hand on title rivals Blackfield and Langley.

"We've got ourselves in a great position and only we can lose it," he said.

"We've got to re-group and make sure between now and May 7 that we do what we've done all season and that is to win games of football and make sure we get out of this league."
