STEVE Walker says he's "on top of the world" after scoring in Salisbury's 3-0 victory over Horndean which saw them clinch the league title.

The 25-year-old produced a sparkling finish after Adam Kelly had broken the deadlock in the second half.

Jamie White then added a third late on to start the promotion party with six games spare.

It came on a night when only a point was needed to secure the Sydenhams Wessex Premier in a game that was switched to the Ray Mac following two postponements and one abandonment at Five Heads Park.

Depending on where other clubs finish, it's likely Whites will be promoted to Southern League South West One.

"I'm over the moon, delighted and glad to get out of the Wessex League now with more bigger things to come. I'm on top of the world," said Walker.

"To win it three weeks early is unbelievable and it's very rare that you see things like that happen in football.

"It's not just the players that have done it, it's the atmosphere, the crowd has been absolutely fantastic this year as well."

The central defender is up to 12 goals now for the season but was denied two when his brace at Horndean last month was ruled out due to the game being stopped at half time because of pitch problems.

According to Weymouth-based Walker, his 64th minute strike was the best of his career.

"It's got to be the best one for me."

"The feeling from that one, to go 2-0 up, is crucial and that killed the game off.

"I kept my eye on the ball and soon as it connected with my foot I knew it was going in.

"It's about time I started scoring a few with my feet rather than my head!"

The former Dorchester Town and Frome Town centre-half was contemplating on not playing semi-professionally this season as he was planning on taking a break.

But following pre-season discussions with assistant manager Micky Jenkins he trialled at the Ray Mac, staring against Dorchester Town on his debut, before earning himself a contract.

And now, after playing an instrumental role in their title chase, despite picking up 15 yellow cards, he wants to go on and progress with the club at step four by getting offered a new contract.

He added: "Hopefully, I can sort myself a deal next year and push on.

"Me and the gaffer have had a little talk but nothing has come of it yet but something is in place and I'll be here next year."
