GLORIOUS late-Spring sunshine shone down on the Ray Mac as Salisbury FC were crowned Wessex League champions in their first season since being reformed.

It took Sam Wilson two penalties but his second half spot kick was the only goal of the game as Whites finished their first and final Wessex league campaign with a 1-0 win over Newport (IOW).

The star striker had started the game on the bench despite being only one goal away from claiming the golden boot outright.

When in the 54th minute Adam Kelly was brought down in the box by Newport defender Spike Pearce it looked like fan favourite Callum Hart - who has never scored a competitive goal - was about to step up.

However Wilson was rushed on and replaced Jamie White. But his first kick of the game was poor and keeper Gary Streeter made a fairly easy save to his right.

Tied with Daniel Mason of Sholing - who already completed the season - Wilson would only need two minutes for a chance at redemption. A Claudio Herbert cross was handled by Ryan Oatley and referee Matthew Russell wasted no time in pointing to the spot.

Despite the fans calling for Hart, this time Wilson was composed sending Streeter the wrong way for his 40th goal of the campaign.

In truth it was a poor game and almost fizzled out into nothing in the final 20 minutes but the 865 fans packed into the Ray Mac were there for one thing - to watch skipper Kane O’Keefe lift the Wessex Premier Division trophy.

The players soaked in the atmosphere on the hottest day of the year to date and the squad can now look forward to Southern League football next year.
