SUPER striker Sam Wilson signed off for the season with the golden boot.

He surpassed Sholing's Dan Mason's total of 39 goals to top the Sydenhams Wessex Premier goal chart.

The all-important 40th goal arrived on the day Salisbury completed their first season as a new club over Newport (IOW).

But it took Wilson two attempts to strike the winning goal - both were spot kicks.

Adam Kelly was hauled down by Spike Pearce in the 54th minute and the referee pointed to the spot.

Despite the 865 fans chanting 'Callum Hart', who has never scored a goal in his lengthy career, Wilson sprung from the bench to step up.

However, keeper Gary Streeter was equal to his tame effort.

Two minutes later Whites were rewarded another penalty when Claudio Herbert's cross was handled by Ryan Oatley.

And this time Wilson sent Streeter the wrong way with a fine strike to be unveiled as the league's top scorer.

"It was lovely to be named top goal-scorer," he told JournalSport.

"Coming on I was nervous, especially as the crowd were singing Hart's name, "I was nervous, but luckily I got a second bite of the cherry and I put that one away. I can't tell you how nervous I was for that second penalty."

The former Sholing and Winchester City striker says he's in discussions with boss Steve Claridge about next season.

The Whites will most likely be playing in Southern League South West One - a level Southampton-based Wilson knows.

"I was moving from club-to-club before coming here," he added, "I wasn't really getting the chance but the gaffer here gave me the opportunity."

"We are in discussions for next season at the moment. Football is a fickle thing, one minute you are the best thing around and the next you are not. That is football, it's a cut-throat business."

Across Salisbury's 60-game season, Wilson has popped up with some spectacular goals.

His stand-out ones include the volley at home to Bemerton Heath Harlequins and twice scoring in Salisbury's gritty last 16 FA Vase tie at Nuneaton Griff.
