STEVE Claridge's title win has left him champing at the bit for more silverware.

The Salisbury FC boss wants to mastermind back-to-back promotions after topping the Sydenhams Wessex Premier.

Although the title race was tight for many months, they finished on 105 points – 20 more than nearest rivals Sholing, who pipped Blackfield and Langley to second spot.

They also came agonisingly close to more silverware, having lost the Wiltshire Senior Cup final and missing out on a momentous day at Wembley for the FA Vase final following a 3-1 semi-final aggregate defeat to fellow phoenix club Hereford.

Now, Whites will be playing at step four in Southern League Division One South & West.

Claridge said: “I think we did it too soon and it took the edge off the season in a way but we did what we had to do and we couldn’t do any more. We worked hard to do what we have done, I don’t think there is much between the two leagues.

"I think the top sides in this league will be fine in the one above but being fine is not good enough for this club. We have got to be better than that. Our aim for next season is play-offs and we will see where we go."

Following a career spanning 29 years, the 50-year-old took his first managerial role at hometown club Portsmouth before joining Weymouth then Millwall.

His fourth stint in charge at Salisbury, where he has a 20 per cent stake in the club, is somewhere he's keen to build.

But, at the same time, says he wants to manage at the highest level possible.

“I want to improve and I want to get back to full-time football but not yet," he added.

"I’m more than happy with what I’m doing and I’ve had one or two other offers but I really enjoy what I’m doing. I can’t be signing people on then leave, that is not how it works. I’ve got to show a bit of loyalty.

“I’ve seen the other side, I’ve had the chairmen who are a nightmare to work for, that is why I have enjoyed this.

"I’m in a situation where I would like to see this through.

"I have got a good group of lads and everything has gone well – why would I want to do anything else?”

Claridge looks set to retain the core of his squad next term, with many agreeing to sign.

They include George Colson, Eddie Perrett, Callum Hart, Calum Brockway, Steve Walker, Jack Vallis, Robbie Matthews, Claudio Herbert, Sam Roberts, Brandon Mundy, Adam Kelly, Dan Demkiv, Danny Young and Kane O'Keefe.

Those still discussing deals are Tom Whelan, Elliot Wheeler, Sam Wilson, Ashley Jarvis, Jamie White, Taurean Roberts and Nathan Ball.

In addition, with the club starting an Under 21 side in the Wyvern League next season, Ashton Leigh and Reece Rusher are expected to remain with more regular football on offer, as well as first-team opportunities. Charlie Blake is also likely to sign playing forms and will also help with first-team physio duties.
