A PITCH invasion by Salisbury supporters at Wantage Town is being investigated by the FA.

A small group of travelling fans raced onto the pitch at Alfredian Park to celebrate Justin Bennett’s dramatic winner on Saturday. Lewis Benson’s free kick in the fifth minute of stoppage time was spilled by stopper Eddie Cavanagh and the striker pounced to finish.

The 1-0 victory initially propelled Whites back into the Division One South and West play-off places, but they were leapfrogged on Tuesday night by Taunton Town, who thumped Larkhall Athletic 10-2.

Salisbury’s three points may come at a heavy price, though, as the incident was lodged by referee Marcus Carmichael and is now in the hands of officials at Wembley headquarters.

A spokesman from the FA has confirmed “we are looking into the matter” and “it’s in the early stages”.

If Whites are charged, they could be fined up to £1,700.

Whites have released the following statement on the incident: “Salisbury Football Club is currently carrying out an investigation into the incident on Saturday. If anyone can provide us with any information, they can do so by calling 01722 776655 or via admin@salisburyfc.co.uk.”

“It would be wrong to make any further comment while the incident is still under investigation.”

Meanwhile, director Jeremy Harwood posted the following on Facebook: “Anyone who went on the pitch was wrong and knew they were wrong. I accept in the heat of the moment it seemed a great idea, but would respect it if people just said sorry.”

Whites are back in league action on Saturday when they welcome rock-bottom Bridgwater Town to Old Sarum (3pm).

Steve Claridge’s men won the reverse fixture 3-1 thanks to Tommy Wright’s double and Brandon Mundy’s strike. The Somerset outfit have just won once on their travels this term.
