A MUCH-LOVED footballer is tackling one of the world’s highest mountains in memory of his wife.

Salisbury City legend Roger Emms is setting his sights on climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa to raise funds for Prospect Hospice, a charity which provided care and support for Rhian while she had cancer.

Emms will start his seven-day trek in September through dense tropical rain forest up to the snow-capped summit.

On his donation page, the 50-year-old said: “In memory of Rhian it just seems the right thing to do.

“Conquering the world’s largest freestanding mountain will be unlike anything I’ve ever done before and unlikely to do again! I hope that it will prove to be the challenge of a lifetime and one I will never forget, and most importantly it will raise vital funds for a fantastic cause in the memory of a fantastic lady and wife......and great friend to so many.”

So far, Emms has raised £4,000 – half of his fundraising target.

Many Whites supporters, whom remember Emms for his defensive duties from 1992 to 2004, have pledged their support to his climb.

Dave Todd posted on Facebook: “Really sorry to hear this. Rhian used to watch Roger at the Park. Not exaggerating when I say Emmsy is one of my all-time favourite players.

“A top, top bloke and a true legend when that word gets used far too easily.”

John Houghton also wrote: “Loved watching Emmsy, a no-nonsense defender. Wish he was still playing, he would be in my team every match.”

And Stuart Cannell described Emms as a “real legend”.

Emms also had stints at Burnham, Andover Town, Newbury Town, Swindon Athletic, Devizes Town and Penhill FC.
