THEY are a double act any defence would be terrified of.

That’s Tommy Wright and Justin Bennett who, as a pair, have scored more goals than any other strikeforce in Division One South and West, including runaway leaders Hereford FC.

With the midway point just passed, Wright and Bennett have each smashed 22 league goals.

Wright first caught the eye of boss Steve Claridge during a pre-season friendly against Basingstoke in which he was on target.

Soon after, they snapped him up on a season-long loan from National League Sutton United, who reached the fifth round of the FA Cup after a 1-0 victory over Leeds United on Sunday. The side, which contains ex-Whites Matt Tubbs, Kevin Amankwaah and Dan Fitchett, will now host Premier League big dogs Arsenal this month for a place in the quarter-finals.

Speaking of Wright, Claridge said: “Tommy played five minutes and I looked at Ian [Ridley], and he looked at me, and I thought he looked decent.”

Partner-in-crime Bennett was one of Claridge’s first summer signings.

The 34-year-old joined his hometown club after terminating his contract at Gosport Borough, where he was the club’s all-time record goalscorer.

“He is probably working harder now than he ever has done in his career,” added Claridge.

“I think he really enjoys playing for the club and understands what we are trying to do.

“When you are taking the young lads out of their football clubs, like Portsmouth, and they come here and it takes them a while to understand how much it means to other people who are here.

“There’s getting that ethos and mentality in because players here want to win and progress.

“These things take a little bit of time.”
