Double gold and silver medals for Muspratt
SALISBURY Stingrays’ Phil Muspratt splashed his way to double gold and silver medals at the World Master Games in Italy.
Battling it out against almost 50,000 competitors from across the world, Muspratt, pictured below, was unfazed at the seven-day event in Turin.
But he didn’t get the dream start in the 200m freestyle, settling for silver after a misjudged turn caused an injury to his right ankle.
But after being forced to make a swift recovery, he smashed his way to gold in the 50m backstroke in a personal best of 29.20 seconds.
A day’s rest gave Muspratt some extra time to prepare for two remaining races at the end of the week. Up against some stiff competition in the 100m freestyle – seeded second behind France’s Gil Panchoo – he produced a season’s best time to clinch gold in 52.87 seconds.
His final event, the 50m freestyle, was his last individual effort of the championships where he was again seeded second behind Panchoo.
This time Panchoo got the better of Muspratt, who finished second in 24.03 secs.
He said: “The 100m freestyle was my race of the championships.
It wasn’t a PB but it was a season’s best and, given the circumstances, I was over the moon. My performances have bolstered my positions at the top of the UK rankings for my age group and given me a welcome confidence boost as well.”
Muspratt also took golds in international relays.
He added: “I have two weeks of hard training before the European Championships in Eindhoven and I hope I can respond to the pressure there like I did here in Turin.”
