Fordingbridge among the title favourites
FORDINGBRIDGE Rugby Club launch their Snows Hampshire League campaign in their 30th anniversary season with a tough match at Southampton on Saturday but are in good heart after a testing runout against Trojans at the weekend.
Having been runnersup in the Hampshire League for the past two seasons and narrowly beaten in two promotion play-offs, Fordingbridge will be among the favourites to go one better this season.
It was a wonder that their match with Trojan was played, with torrential rain, hailstorms, thunder and lightning darkening the skies around Fordingbridge, making conditions horrendous for both teams.
But it was Trojans who came out on top 21-7, scoring two tries and three penalties.
Fordingbridge had only one try to show for a massive effort – scored by impressive centre Joe Brewer and converted by Mat Norton.
Meanwhile Fordingbridge 2nd XV made an electrifying start to the new season, beating Portsmouth 3rd XV 65-0, putting them in a confident mood ahead of their match with Wimborne 3rd XV at the Rec on Saturday.
Ellingham & Ringwood Rugby Club kicked off their latest campaign with an impressive 33-7 home victory in their pre-season friendly against East Dorset.
Coach Phil Osman said: “This was a great opportunity to try out some different combinations and I learned a lot from the game.
“I was particularly impressed with our new signings Oli Grant and Tommy Horne from Havant, Joe Tarrant from Bournemouth and scrum half Dan Pozzo, who has just moved back to England.”
Verwood Rugby Club are hoping to reap the benefits of a busy summer when their campaign starts on Saturday.
They added eight new players at their annual bank holiday rustic fayre.
The club have added sponsors on board, and a project is in progress to provide a dedicated rugby training area.
There will soon be a fully licensed bar and improved seating areas for all of Potterne Park’s sports teams and the public to enjoy.
