Salisbury prepare for opening showdown
SALISBURY’S pre-season preparations get a real competitive edge on Saturday when the city club plays in Hampshire Hockey’s new-look cup tournament at Wimborne’s Queen Elizabeth School complex.
Salisbury are among 19 clubs involved in round-robin matches at four separate venues across the county, writes Mike Vimpany.
Tom Morton’s side will play three separate matches against Bournemouth, Swanage & Wareham, and Weymouth.
If Salisbury win the group, they will qualify for the quarter-finals, alongside EHL Western Conference duo Fareham and Havant.
“It’s the sort of preparation we need as we’ve got a demanding start game against newly promoted Camberley & Farnborough in the Regional League on Saturday, October 5,” Morton said.
“We are three weeks into our preseason and our new squad is starting to take shape.
“We have lost Chris Warde who has gone to teach at Stowe but we have gained a few new players.
“Jon Powell is back with Salisbury at least until Christmas, Matt Orchard is back from university and our youngsters are rapidly improving.
“This will really help with our squad’s strength in depth.”
