James hopes to win pro-contract
TIDWORTH army musician James Slimm is hoping to win a professional football contract with Swindon Town, Leyton Orient or Wycombe Wanderers as part of Samsung’s Win A Pro Contract competition.
Slimm, of Sidbury Circular Road, Tidworth, is a goalkeeper for CAMUS FC in the London District League.
The 22-year-old said: “My parents invested a lot in my music when I was a kid. I joined the Corps of Army Music as a trumpeter and have had the opportunity to perform at the London Olympics and do a tour of Afghanistan.
“Football has always been my real passion though and I would give anything to swap my life now, for that of a pro footballer.
“This is the choice I should have made as a child – picking up the keeper’s gloves and not the trumpet.”
For the first time since Win A Pro Contract was launched in 2010, there are three professional contracts on offer and hopefuls will be tested at regional skills trials and 11-a-side matches as they bid to kick-start their dreams of becoming a professional footballer.
Last year’s winners, Jack Sherratt and Kayden Jackson, signed for Orient and Swindon respectively, and are hoping to make first-team debuts this season.
