Downton star steps onto podium
OLLIE Pidgley delivered a star performance at his debut in the Michelin Clio Cup Series with Protyre at Brands Hatch Indy Circuit in Kent over the weekend, claiming his maiden podium finish in only his second ever car race.
The 16-year-old, driving for hugely successful squad Team Pyro, fought back from a troublesome start in the second of the event’s encounters to climb into third place overall on his first weekend since moving out of kart racing.
Notably, he was just 0.9 seconds shy of runner-up Brett Lidsey (Dartford) at the finish.
Slipping to the tail of the Racecar Class field off the start line as he struggled with wheelspin, Pidgley mounted a superb recovery to scythe his way back into contention.
Impressively, the youngster also posted the fastest lap of the race on the final tour to underline his clear potential.
“The pace we had in testing on Friday was surprising,” said the Trafalgar School student.
“We didn’t think we’d be anywhere near that as I’d only had half a day at the track last week.
“It’s been a strong first weekend for us.
“I’m really pleased with how my first races in cars have gone.”
