Second for Holloway in Solent half marathon
CITY of Salisbury Athletic Club’s Stuart Holloway ran his way straight back into contention for the Hampshire Road Race League title when he took an excellent second place in the Solent half marathon and led his club to a narrow but vital win in the men’s season-long team competition.
His time of 1hour 13min 31sec reflected the good conditions on the day, light rain helping to offset the prolonged effort required over 13 fast miles on the tarmac. At the finishing line he was only 16 seconds behind Lewis Chalk of Stubbington Green, who took the win on the day.
But the keenly-fought tussle for team honours between these two clubs went Salisbury’s way, though only after three first class personal best performances.
Ben Brewster produced one of his best runs to clinch tenth place with 1.17.16, then came his father Michael Brewster just six places back in a remarkable 1.19.57 and Kevin Tilley in 1.22.41 for 26th spot.
Injury to Salisbury’s Katie West meant she was unable to give the ladies’ team her usual lead-out, but in her stead Faye Parker delivered the goods with an outstanding 1.31.53 to register another of the day’s personal bests. Sally Greenslade showed she is coming back to form with 1.35.09 and Ruth Thom with a pb 1.40.09 completed the club’s league scorers.
Other Salisbury finishers were Ian Shelley with a big improvement to 1.23.54, Adrian Woolven 1.27.26, Andy Budgell 1.28.26 pb, Phil Smith 1.32.22, Nick Willetts 1.40.00, Melanie Murphy 1.49.53, Andy Robbins 1.54.10, Jane Whiteley 1.54.20, Hillary Webber 2.04.51 and Colin Martin 2.12.18.
- In the Chalke Valley Challenge 10k, Beverley Hards won first lady and her age group award with 42min 21sec and she was followed by Simon Wiltshire 44.34, Steve Lomas 48.02, Terry Ryalls 50.34 to win his age group, and Vivienne Grant 63.17.
Young Maisie Grant won the under 16s 3k and the veteran Gordon Wiltshire also finished with credit.
