SHREWTON United produced one of their best performances of the season as they hit eight unanswered goals against Marlborough Town to stay on the tails of leaders Supermarine – Saturday’s visitors.
The hosts dominated from the start with Craig Lewis having an effort saved from six yards in the opening ten seconds. The one-way traffic continued until the pressure paid off in the tenth minute when Carlos Downie fired into the roof of the net for his first of the season.
Chances continued to be created by United with Lewis missing twice when through on goal before Downie registered his second after responding quickest in the box when Archie Wilkinson headed onto the post.
Downie then missed a great chance to register his first ever hat-trick when he headed wide from just two yards before Marlborough hit the bar from a rare attack as Shrewton took a two goal advantage into the interval.
The second half saw the Shrews run riot as Wilkinson made it three after great build-up play and Jesse Walters volleyed in the fourth moments later.
James Dolman made it 5-0 after his pace saw him get beyond the Marlborough defence before slotting home and Ross Bentall added another with a neat finish with the outside of his foot after a pinpoint 40 yard pass from Joey Weeks.
A Lewis Barr towering header and a cool finish from Walters completed the scoring.
