DAMERHAM hockey custodian Alana Mercer has been called-up to play for her country.

The teenager, from Canford School in Wimborne, will play in goal for England under 16s ahead of upcoming international matches against Holland, Belgium, Germany, Spain, Scotland and Ireland, as well as numerous training camps in this country and abroad.

“She loves playing,” said proud mother Sharon Mercer.

“Alana has put in some very consistent performances and is playing at a high level. “And playing for England is something she’s always wanted to do which is what she told her fellow teammates at Salisbury, and her dream came true.”

Alana, 15, started out five years ago at Salisbury Cathedral School when she was encouraged by PE teacher, Nancy Buchanan at the time, to tryout in goal.

Learning to love life in the goalmouth, she joined Salisbury Hockey Club and made her full senior debut at 13 after a selection of trials.
