CITY of Salisbury athletes had a field day in the Drovers off-road half marathon based at Netherhampton racecourse.

In going that varied from soft to marshy, Chris Southern cantered his way around the 13mile hill-topping route out to Fovant, and back, to win by a distance in an outstanding time of 1hour 24min 45sec, breaking the course record in the process.

Though around half a mile back, Ben Brewster still showed well, taking a good second place with 1.29.00.

Katie West was equally prominent in the ladies’ competition, taking first place with 1.47.37 and close behind was Sarah Kemp who took a break from her triathlon regime to register a solid 1.48.12.

Other Salisbury finishers were Jon Rich with 1.41.15, Phil Smith 1.44.30, Dave West 1.45.14, David Osment 1.47.28, Katie Clements 2.05.00, Steve Lomas 2.16.06, Kathryn Waterworth 2.25.13, Liz Roberts 2.25.33 and Will Witt 2.40.20.

On firmer footing in the Bath half marathon, Jon Greenhalgh was the club’s only representative and he finished around half way up the large pack with a time of 1.34.37.

Faster pace featured on the indoor track at the Lee Valley grand prix meeting, where Jay Domoney was impressive winner of the under 17 1500m, setting a new personal best of 4min 26sec. Alex Mundell won her race too, the under 20 1500m, her time of 4.46 putting her sixth in the age group national rankings.

A big field is set to contest the City of Salisbury 10mile road race today, starting 10.30am, at Five Rivers Leisure Centre running track, where the club's top runners will be bent on holding their table-topping positions in the Hampshire League.
