LONG distance runner Phil Smith gave himself a break from big mileage competitions when he took to the hills of the multi terrain Pewsey Vale Bluebell 12k.

The City of Salisbury runner demonstrated his killer speed by taking sixth place in a time of 55min 07sec among more than a hundred finishers.

Martin Phillips did well with 63.39, then came Mel Holloway 65.55, Liz Roberts 72.17 and Kathryn Dreyer 80.33.

After a frustrating absence due to injury, Andy Budgell returned to competition with an encouraging top 50 placing in the Blackpool half marathon where, among a thousand competitors enjoying plentiful supplies of water around the course, he clocked 95min 06sec. Claire Budgell defied the windy conditions to notch a personal best of 111min 58sec.

At the Cambourne 10k near Cambridge, John Gorham made a rare appearance at an off-road 10k and crossed the finishing line in an encouraging 47min 18sec.
