CITY of Salisbury’s athletics squad flew out of the blocks to score their best ever start to the summer season by winning the first Southern League fixture at Eastbourne.

Lizzie Clifford led the way, taking the 400m hurdles in 65.3sec to equal the league record. She went on to notch up a personal best 8.29m in the shot and second place in her first attempt at the triple jump with 9.64m. After winning the 400m in 60sec, Alex Mundell went on to win her debut in the 1500m steeple chase with 5min 23sec.

The two were joined by Phoebe Wing and Freya Espir for a good win in the 4x400m relay.

Salisbury’s men’s team were equally impressive, with Richard Holt, pictured, winning both the long jump with 6.69m for a new league record, and triple jump with 12.93m, backed up by Abby Babatunde’s 5.57 and 11.29.

Hamish Mundell set a new pb when winning the 400m hurdles in 61.6sec, and Jake Ness cruised to a 50.0sec win in the 400m, supported by Charlie Britten 52.6 and Callum MacTaggart 52.9.

Tom Cummings’ win in the 2000m steeplechase earned him the man of the match award with 6min 21.6sec and he was followed by Darren Clissold in 7min 46.8. Austen Lane stepped up to the seniors with a good win in his 100m with 11.7sec and Aidan Holmes won the javelin with 45.09m.

At Portsmouth’s Mountbatten Centre Heidi Porter started her new season on a high by running a new pb in the 800m with a fine 2min 38sec. Over the same distance Jay Domoney clocked 2min 8sec.

A trio of speedy Mundell’s – Tasha, under 15 and Hamish and Alex, under 20, took the evening meet at Poole by storm: Tasha clipped 15 sec off her 600m pb for third place in 2min 0.2sec; Hamish matched that with a third place pb of 1min 31.6sec; and Alex won her 1000m with a new club record of 2min 57sec.

On the road, the father-son pairing at the Yeovilton 5k Simon Wiltshire recorded 19min 2 sec and Gordon Wiltshire 30.21.

Off road, Sally Greenslade ran her first 10k trail race in North Wales and despite the challenging mud she was second lady with a time of 56min 25sec. In the tough Exmoor marathon Liz Roberts ticked another endurance event off her impressive list clocking 5.31.44. Andy Robbins opted for the shorter but equally scenic 10k and did well to record 59.26.
