THE big guns were back at Gurston Down Speed Hillclimb at the weekend.

After a wet practice day on Saturday with slower times, the sun came out in force on Sunday as the speeds increased with fantastic final run offs, writes Luke Clifford.

Adrian Lewis from Salisbury was excited by his Westfield Megabusa and a personal best on his second run on Sunday, doing 35.42.

He said: “I’m really happy with the new set up on the car, by racer Tom New of New Techniques in Southampton.

There is much more drive available and I’m much more confident going through Hollow.”

Driving his Mitsubishi Evo 6, Stephen Moore from Stapleford was the only competitor in his class, finishing first with 34.75.

Hugh Kemp from Wylye, driving his Palliser WDF3, finished first in both timed runs on Sunday. His fastest time was 36.03. Chris Cannell and Sue Hayes, in their Force SR8, were up against tough competition and Cannell clocked 29.74 on his second run to finish third in class.

The two top 12 run-offs of the day were really competitive and nail-biting to the end. The first run-off was won by Wallace Menzies, doing 26.42 in DJ Firestorm, from Scott Moran and Trevor Willis. The second run-off and the final race of the afternoon was eagerly awaited and with temperatures the highest for the weekend, good fast starts were anticipated.

New set the pace doing 26.61, with Menzies coming back with 26.02. Willis couldn’t quite get there with 26.36 and Moran pleased the crowd, flying up the hill doing 25.98 in his Gould GR61X.

Moran said: “I’m pleased with the run and my first win.”

Moran is now leading the championship by one point from Menzies. The next action at Gurston is on June 21 to 22.

Salisbury's Stuart Waite qualified in pole from a grid of 28 at Rockingham circuit, Northampton, on Sunday in the second round of the Toyo Tyres Production BMW championship. He had a clean sweep with double poles, wins and fastest laps.
