CHAMPIONS South Wilts went on a run spree as they piled up a massive 312-7 against Lymington - but left it late before wrapping up a thumping 169-run ECB Southern Electric Premier League victory at the Sports Ground.

Only 12 minutes of playing time were left when South Wilts eventually prised out a defiant Lymington lower-order to clinch a maximum 25-point victory.

Skipper Tom Morton was the only batsmen to miss out on the run frenzy as Eddie Abel (37) and Jack Mynott (59) eased Lymington to 110-1 before Darren Cowley (4-74) achieved a double breakthrough.

Their departure didn't halt the scoring spree, as Steve Riddle (45) and James Hayward (31) cashed in before Joe Cranch struck a fierce 70 not out, including one massive six, to send the total rocketing past the 300-mark.

Teenager Jake Foley, who has joined South Wilts from Colchester & East Essex prior to starting a sports degree course at Southampton Solent University, chipped in with 23 not out before South Wilts reached 312-7 at the end of the 63rd over.

The innings contained three sixes and 42 boundaries.

South Wilts gave themselves just enough time to win the game - although with Lymington wobbling at 79-6 at one stage, the contest looked as though it might be over a good deal earlier.

But a highly restrained Cowley (42), who normally puts bat to ball with great power and gusto, dug in for one shy of 100 deliveries.

He found a reliable seventh-wicket partner in Ed Ellis, who batted even longer for his unbeaten 33 and frustrated South Wilts for a long while, adding 41.

Morton employed eight bowlers before James Hibberd (3-36) eventually broke the stand at 120, whereupon two wickets fell in quick succession.

But Ellis battled on, helping Lymington add another 21 with the equally defiant Paul McCann.

But McCann and Ed Freeman fell in successive balls to end the innings at 143 all out - with probably no more than four overs remaining.
