A COMBINATION of warm and wet weather didn’t alter another compelling weekend of racing at Gurston Down Speed HillClimb, writes Luke Clifford.

Fordingbridge’s Miles Horne gradually increased his times to finish first in the up to 2000cc roadgoing series production car class (A), doing 39.41 in his Peugeot 306 GTi.

Stephen Moore, who was racing near Glasgow on Saturday in Lancer Register Sprint Series where he came second, arrived at Gurston on Sunday morning. And the Stapleford driver pulled-off the fastest time of 34.06 to win in his class.

Adrian Lewis did another personal best of 35.31 and came fourth in class and Steve Holley did 35.32 to come second in class. Hugh Kemp in the historically interesting cars came second, doing 36.70 in his Palliser WDF3.

Nic Mann’s Manic Beattie turbo engine did 28.24 to come first in Sports Libre cars, and said “I am really glad to get my record back again.”

Salisbury garage owner Chris Cannell held onto the lead of the Gurston Down Top Ten Challenge with an excellent sub-30 second climb in his 2.6 Force SR8 Sports Libre car, finishing just eight hundredths of a second ahead of Rodney Thorne from Frampton near Dorchester in his 5.0 Pilbeam MP43.

Deryk Young did the fastest time of the day in the top 12 run off with a whopping 27.52 in his Gould GR51.

The DEWS club from Downton, celebrating their 50th anniversary, displayed their Minis, with Howard Taylor getting Most Improved Driver and Matt Clarke coming first in class two, which he has done at his last three events.

The next racing weekend at Gurston Down is on August 23 and 24.
