DEFENDING road race league champions City of Salisbury are back in action on Sunday with much work to do if they are to hold on to their crown this season.

They are already down to a lowly eighth place in the table after the first two fixtures of the new campaign.

Salisbury’s lead runner in the league’s individual standings is Stuart Holloway in sixth, but despite his best efforts, the men’s A team trail some distance behind leaders Stubbington Green and Winchester AC.

The club’s ladies team have fared only slightly better and are in sixth spot overall, with Sally Greenslade the best performer so far in 16th.

This weekend’s fixture is the Solent half marathon at Exbury, where the Salisbury club is hoping to start recovering the kind of form that has reaped rich rewards in both of the last two seasons.

At the Bristol half marathon, Katherine Bleakeley was the club’s only runner, clocking a steady 97min 26sec, and in the Hursley 10k, Mel Holloway’s 46.55 was enough to win her age category.
