SHREWTON United set up a mouthwatering derby with Amesbury Town after they upset Western League outfit Devizes Town in the first round of the Wiltshire Senior Cup.

They will travel to Bonneymead Park in the second round next month after they finally saw off their higher league opponents after extra time 3-2.

The success is United's fourth successive victory in the last 12 months against teams that are the step above them in the football pyramid.

The result continued a trend of performing well against higher league opposition despite a disappointing start to the league campaign.

Shrewton's passage into the next round was done the hard way as they conceded within 30 seconds.

A long ball caught the home defence napping before the visiting forward fired past Joe Sheldrake in the Shrewton goal.

To the hosts’ credit, they immediately settled following the early setback and began to dominate possession and force the visitors back into their own half. However, chances were at a premium as the Devizes back line maintained a good shape to limit United to long range efforts. After the break, the pressure increased on the home goal as Shrewton regularly got into good positions before the final ball let them down.

Devizes become increasingly happy to sit deep and hit the hosts on the counter attack and it nearly paid off midway through the half as a breakaway saw Sheldrake called into action to block a low drive with his foot.

The equaliser came in the 70th minute when a brave George Plank forced the ball over the line following a goalmouth scramble. At this stage there only looked like there would be only one winner and with just two minutes remaining Mike Joy had a golden chance to seal the tie but he somehow managed to miss from two yards as the match ended 1-1 after 90 minutes.

Once again the Shrews were made to pay for a slow start as they immediately found themselves behind following the restart and Devizes once again retreated in attempt to hold onto their lead.

The slender advantage was wiped out in the second period of extra time as Craig Lewis jinked past his marker before unleashing an unstoppable shot that cannoned in off the post to make it 2-2 and set up a grandstand finish.

With penalties looming the match was sealed in the last minute as a pinpoint Graham Coombes corner found the head of Lewis Barr to make it 3-2. Shrewton return to league action on Saturday when they host Wroughton (3pm).
