BUOYANT The Wanderers sealed their spot in the quarter final of the Wiltshire Junior Cup after a fine win at Potterne FC, who were undefeated before the meeting.

Last season’s semi finalists and current Salisbury and District Premier table-toppers The Wanderers showed mercy away from home with an impressive three-nil triumph.

Eager to grab the upper hand, it was going to take a signature strike to serve up the opener as both keepers thwarted the opposition’s attacks.

And up popped Alex Cook, who weaved his magic after finding some space to unleash a rasping drive which crisped into the roof of the net from 30 yards.

Things soon got better for the visitors when Nick Newman turned sharply and struck home an unstoppable low finish for 0-2 cushion.

Potterne, who had scored 48 goals in their previous six games, were constantly pressing to get back into the game but the impressive partnership of Lucas and Cheverall led their troops and stood up to the task every time.

At this point, the hosts were getting stretched and it was left to talisman Adam Jones to wrap up the win on 67 minutes with a close-range finish.

Wanderers manager Liam McConnell said: “That was certainly our most accomplished performance of the season. We knew this would be a test, they have a lot of experienced players but we proved how much we want this trophy with an almost flawless performance.

“We were missing some key players but it was great to see Andrew Duffy and Russ Parsons returning after lengthy injuries. They slotted straight back in and just showed the depth of this squad.”

The Wanderers are away to North Bradley in the last eight on Saturday, December 6 (1.45pm).

Alderbury and Stockton and Codford also made it through to the next stage of the competition.
