PORTON Sports avenged last week’s cup exit with a win at South Newton and Wishford in Salisbury and District Premier (Saturday) League.

Following Porton’s bitter 2-3 defeat in the Lord Bledisloe Cup to South Newton, they made the short trip to Stoford Recreation Ground where they put right their throwing away a two-goal lead last weekend, emerging 2-1 winners.

Late in the first half, the first goal arrived following an uneventful start. A miscued back pass to the South Newton keeper allowed Porton’s frontman to pounce and net the opener.

The home side started the second half brightly, but an early opportunity went begging when Adam Payne failed to find the target when in a one-onone one scenario with the Porton keeper.

South Newton managed to maintain this pressure and eventually their endeavours were rewarded.

Player-manager Keith Darling headed home a free kick delivered by Rich Tutt.

Having restored parity, South Newton thought they had sneaked ahead but their goal was ruled out for offside.

Points looked like they would be shared until a long-range effort snatched the points for the visitors.

Darling reflected on defeat: “I thought we deserved something out of the game, we battled hard but have to start taking the chances when they come along.”
