SLOW-MOVING Verwood Town will aim to bury their league woes when their FA Vase expedition gets back under way.

The Potters have the favourable home advantage on Saturday for the visit of South West Peninsula League outfit Plymouth Parkway (3pm) in the second round.

They reached this stage of the competition after wins over league rivals Fareham Town and Western Leaguers Roman Glass St George.

And victory over their Devon visitors will mean a cash boost of £1,200 and a place in the third round.

The Vase could prove to be the welcome break Carl Poore’s men need from the league after picking up just four wins this term.

Saturday saw them slip to a fourth straight defeat in Wessex Premier to promotion candidates Winchester City.

Jordan Fisk struck eight minutes before the interval at Potterne Park but Warren Bentley levelled from the spot, one of Winchester’s four goals in the next 15 minutes.

Adam Roberts capped off a 5-1 victory with an effort late on but manager Poore was aggrieved with some of referee’s decisions.

“Take nothing away from Winchester, they deserved their win, but if the officials had got their decisions right we would’ve been 2-0 up against nine men,” he said.

Elsewhere, Sean Leadbetter scored twice for Ringwood Town in their 3-2 sufferance at New Milton Town in Wessex Division One.

Ringwood played Fleet Town in the Russell Cotes Cup on Tuesday night and won 10-9 on penalties after it finished 2-2 in normal time.

Pewsey visit on Saturday.
