SHREWTON United bowed out of the Corsham Print Senior Cup at the first hurdle after a narrow 1-2 home defeat to Chippenham Youth.

The home side will be kicking themselves after losing a match which they dominated for large periods.

United started the better of the two as they played at a tempo which Chippenham struggled to cope with and, after ten minutes, the home faithful were celebrating the opening goal. Prolific Craig Lewis pounced on a loose ball on the edge of the area and fired past the visiting custodian.

With the visitors on the ropes, Shrewton looked like they would take control but they were unable to force a second goal as Dean Foot fired over after a succession of corners came to nothing.

Shrewton's wastefulness in front of the sticks was almost punished on the stroke of half time as a free kick was met by a Chippenham head from six yards out, but the alert Joe Sheldrake in the home goal was able to tip it onto the bar before Lewis Barr hooked the ball to safety.

That effort should have acted as a warning for the hosts as Chippenham came out in the second half fired up.

And within two minutes of the restart they were level as a smart turn and finish from inside the penalty area flew past Sheldrake.

Minutes later, Shrewton fell behind as the visitors reacted quickest following a corner to go 2-1 ahead.

The home side tried to get back on level terms and Dean Foot was twice denied by the woodwork late on.

Shrewton return to league action on Saturday when they host Malmesbury (2.15pm).
