SHREWTON United’s woeful form rolled on as they were on the wrong end of a nine-goal thriller against high-fliers Malmesbury Victoria at the Recreation Ground.

The game started well for the hosts as a Craig Lewis cross was turned home by Dom Jackson to make it 1-0. However, Malmesbury quickly found a way back into the game as they converted the first of two penalties they were awarded, before Jackson restored United’s advantage before the break.

But for the second week running, Shrewton collapsed after the interval as the visitors ran riot, scoring three goals in quick succession to make it 4-2 and seemingly put the game beyond the hosts’ reach.

This was not the case, though, as George Plank continued a fine goalscoring season by adding another to his tally after he reacted first at the back post following a corner.

Jackson completed his hat-trick to set up a grandstand finale, and at 4-4 it was anyone’s for the taking.

But Malmesbury showed why they are bidding for promotion from the Wiltshire Premier League by poaching a last-gasp winner to take the points back with them to north Wiltshire.

This weekend Shrewton host Westbury United (2pm).

Players Dean Foot and Craig Lewis will take charge of Shrewton following the departure of manager Graham Coombes.

The club hope to make a permanent appointment in the new year.
