ROB Gallagher, pictured, ended Laverstock and Ford’s three-month wait for victory to cause shock over a steady United Services Portsmouth.

Gallagher, who coincidentally netted in Lavvy’s last victory on August 23 at home to Hythe and Dibden, weaved his magic for the hapless visitors in the opening 18 minutes.

From 18 yards out, he unleashed a menacing strike into the bottom corner of Pompey’s net with the keeper rooted to the spot.

This goal lifted Lavvy and gave them a foothold they needed as they preserved their lead at the break.

The second half started with the away side taking the game to the Navy and looking dangerous with every attack. Ollie Batchelor saw two early chances go begging, one long range effort which went wide with the keeper out of position, and the other a header from six yards that glanced inches wide.

On the hour, Lewis Wykes won Laverstock a penalty after being shoved to the ground and his brother Elliott took the honours from 12 yards, but his effort was saved.

Elliott went close again late on, this time he was denied by the woodwork with an angled drive and Kane O’Keefe also clipped the upright with a deflected effort.

The three points and clean sheet helped Lavvy take a stride away from the relegation zone, which was just what they needed, according to boss Robbie Lakeman.

He said: “This was a great win for us and the manner in which we achieved it was the most pleasing thing for me. The whole side worked their socks off and at stages, when we were under pressure, we didn't buckle, we just rode them out and looked dangerous going forward all game. If we can keep this level of performance up moving forward, then we will be ok.

“Consistency in our performances has proved a problem all season but in the last few weeks I have seen a marked improvement in this.

“Unfortunately we don't have a game this weekend and when you are looking to be consistent you need to play!”

Laverstock look to book their place in the semi final of the Wiltshire Senior Cup with victory over Corsham a week Saturday (3pm).
