SALISBURY point-to-point rider Liz Ampairee had cause for celebration after winning an “unforgettable” charity race on a horse which made a last-ditch entry.

The decision by jubilant trainer Alan King to put First Mohican forward proved fruitful when it cruised home by 15 lengths at Barbury Castle Racecourse.

First Mohican, in the stalls at 6/4, never looked threatened or fazed by the 11 runners over the one-mile distance, providing a home win for the Barbury Estate.

In second place was Pandora Bailey from Hungerford on Offshore Account and scooping third was Tik Saunders, the daughter-in-law of Grand National winning rider Dick Saunders, on Royal Etiquette.

The field of 12 raised more than £15,000 for the Injured Jockey’s Fund (IJF) – a charity which provides support to amateur jockeys and point-to-point riders who have suffered from injuries.

Ampairee said: “To ride a horse like First Mohican is just a dream come true and to win at Barbury while raising funds for the IJF is icing on the cake.

“First Mohican’s owner Henry Ponsomby has also been a great sport and I am very grateful for his support and to all of Alan King’s team for this unforgettable experience.”
