HIGH-FLYING South Newton & Wishford took a step in the right direction in their bid to clinch silverware this season following a quarter final triumph in the Charity A Cup.

Keith Darling’s side won away 2-0 at Porton Sports to line-up in the last four and a clash against Cedars FC, who overcame Devizes Inn in a dramatic penalty shootout.

Porton started the game brightly and had South Newton on the back foot early on in the game.

But the hosts’ possession counted for nothing as midway through the first half South Newton scored two quickfire goals. Centre-half Dan Winter got the first after dinking the Porton keeper and Charlie Lee nodded home a second.

Porton pressed for a way back into the match in the second period but South Newton’s back line held firm.

“I see a big difference in the team this season,” admitted player/manager Darling.

“We have showed grit and determination and have been able to grind out results. Dan and I are forming a good partnership at the back and are looking forward to getting back to action after the Christmas break.”

The other semi finalists, Stockton & Codford, await the winners of The Wanderers and West Harnham as their match was postponed at the weekend.
