BOSS Gareth Horner insists his Amesbury Town side is reaping the benefits of their "fantastic" team spirit in Wessex Division One.

Horner, who has been in the number one role for a little over two years, is looking to record the Blues' highest league position when the standings are finalised at the end of this month.

It could be a fourth place delight after the Bonnymead Park outfit disposed of Pewsey Vale on Easter Monday.

Craig Lewis' brace and goals from Danny Finnigan and Nic Turpin completed a comprehensive 4-0 victory in their penultimate league match over Pewsey Vale.

After a forgetful March, in which Amesbury slipped out of the title race, they have a fighting chance of finishing in the top four, providing other results go their way.

"We defended well from front to back and when the defence were breached [goalkeeper] Paddy Crease was alert to the danger," said Horner, whose troops mustered their first league clean sheet in two months.

"The question has been throughout the year, after winning our first two games comprehensively, of our title aspirations and when we got to the end of February we actually started to believe we were in with a shout.

"Unfortunately, key injuries and suspensions and not being able to call on match fit players, which is no fault of their own, has been a hindrance.

"If you look at the sides in and around us I would say they have slightly more resources than us and maybe I could have done with a little more after the Christmas games to get a few more in just to add a bit of experience to the squad.

"When I took charge just over two years ago we were sitting second from bottom and you couldn’t see how we were going to progress.

"The spirit throughout the team is fantastic and we are blessed to have been able to use the players from our very successful youth team who have slotted in perfectly."

Amesbury close the campaign at home to New Milton Town a week on Saturday before preparing for the Hospital Cup Final on May 1 in a replay with Pewsey.
