SHREWTON United fell to their heaviest defeat for two years as they went down 5-0 away to Calne Town in Wiltshire League Premier Division.

With a number of absentees, Shrews manager Scott Young was once again forced to make several changes which led to a disjointed performance.

Calne have improved considerably since Shrewton put seven past them before the turn of the year and they dominated from the start in a one-sided encounter.

The opening goal came after two minutes and it soon became 2-0 after ten minutes following two excellent strikes which gave Matt Cross in the Shrews’ goal no chance.

Shrewton did improve as the half went on and dominated for a 15-minute spell before the break where the impressive Calne goalkeeper was forced into two excellent saves from Craig Appleby’s efforts.

Following a succession of corners for United, they were hit on the counter attack and via a huge deflection they found themselves 3-0 down at the break.

The second period started more evenly without any real chances of note created until the hour mark when a penalty was awarded to Calne after Cross was adjudged to have brought down the pacy home forward.

The penalty was tucked away before a fifth was added with ten minutes left on the referee’s whistle.

Manager Young reflected: “It was the worst performance I have seen here by a long way and Calne deserved the victory. The quality we have been producing just wasn’t there and the only positive can be that we showed some pride in the second half.

“We will look to put it right next week.”

Sixth-placed Shrews visit Wootton Bassett on Saturday, which is the start of seven games to be played over three weeks.
