STEVE Claridge says he would take the vacant managerial job at Portsmouth FC "in a heartbeat" and "it's something I've always wanted to do" after Andy Awford parted company with the club this morning.

The already-committed Salisbury FC boss, who has a 20 per cent stake in the phoenix club, told BBC Radio Solent he would relish the opportunity of a return to Fratton Park.

"It's the most wonderful job in the world as the fans, even when it's not going your way, still get behind you," said the 49-year-old, who netted 34 times between 1998/2001 for Pompey.

"I'd do it in a heartbeat. That's well-known and that has never been an issue.

It's something I've always wanted to do. I wish I could get it out my system but I cannot unfortunately."

When pressured by the interviewer on whether he's going to apply for the job, the Football League Show pundit and Radio 5 Live summariser failed to rule out the prospect of putting himself forward.

Claridge bought the assets of the old Whites - Salisbury City FC - alongside Ian Ridley, David Phillips, Jeremy Harwood and Graeme Mundy in December.
